Nursing from the Heart: Jackline’s Journey Through Compassion and Care
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your continued support and to share a little story from my nursing journey.
During my recent clinical rotation, I was assigned to a busy hospital ward. On my first day, I was excited (and honestly a little nervous) to finally put everything I’ve learned into practice. On my second day, I was caring for an elderly patient with advanced dementia. She was confused, disoriented, and often refused help. When I tried to take her vitals, she became very upset and asked me to leave.
I felt so bad afterward. I started doubting myself — wondering if I was really meant to be a nurse. I realized that no textbook could fully prepare me for the emotions that come with real patient care.
Later that day, my clinical instructor checked in with me. When I shared how I felt like I had failed, she said something powerful:
"This isn’t failure. It’s the beginning of learning to see your patient as a whole person, not just a diagnosis."
The next day, I tried a new approach. I spoke gently, asked about her life, and learned she loved music. Slowly, she started to trust me. It didn’t solve everything, but it showed me how important patience, kindness, and human connection are in nursing.
That experience taught me something important — nursing isn’t just about medical skills. It’s about the heart. It’s about persistence, compassion, and being present even when it’s hard.
I’m truly grateful to be on this path, and even more grateful that I get to walk it with your support behind me. Thank you for believing in me and making this possible.
